Accident An undesired event that results in harm to people, damage to property, loss to process or harm to the environment.
Acid Rock Drainage (ARD) When certain types of rocks are exposed to air, they oxidize and become acidic. Water passing over acid-generating rocks can leach potential contaminants that could adversely affect surface water, affect plant growth, corrode pipes and equipment, and harm the surrounding ecosystem.
Activated Carbon Chemically treated and heated carbon, which has the ability to absorb gold and other metals.
Afforestation The establishment of a forest or trees in an area where there was previously no forest, or in an area where the forests had been previously removed.
All Injury Rate Includes first aid, medical reportable, restricted duty and Lost Time Accidents.
Artisanal Mining Also known as small-scale mining; performed by individuals not affiliated with a mining company, often conducted at a subsistence level and outside the regulatory framework.
Assurance Both internal and third-party evaluations that provide external stakeholders confidence in our performance and reporting.
Autoclaving A process of adding heat and pressure to extract gold from ore.

Backfill Material used to fill the space in a mine after ore has been extracted.
Barren Solution The solution from which the gold has been extracted.
Best Available Control Technology A standard of pollution control mandated by the U.S. Clean Air Act, generally representing the maximum reduction in the discharge of emissions achievable through currently available methods.
Biodiversity The richness and variety of living things - animals, plants and the ecosystems that support them.
Bullion The product of smelting or refining precious metals, usually in the form of bars or ingots.
Byproduct A metal or mineral product recovered in the milling process in addition to the target product (gold).

Crushing and Grinding The process by which ore is broken into small pieces to prepare it for further processing.
Cultural Heritage Sites Sites with cultural significance (e.g., cemeteries, sacred sites and shrines).
Cyanide A chemical containing the molecule CN (carbon and Nitrogen) used to dissolve gold and silver from ore.

Decant Water Water recovered from the tailing storage facilities.
Deposit An area where gold or other metal has been found.
Developmental Assignment Program Educates and builds employee skills. Includes formal education through universities and/or technical workshops.
(Pit) de-water Removing groundwater that saturates the orebody to safely excavate the ore.
Doré Unrefined gold and silver bullion bars usually consisting of approximately 90% precious metals that will be further refined to almost pure metal.

Environmental Impact Analysis (EIA) An analysis of all the environmental impacts associated with a plan of development including beneficial and detrimental impacts.
Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) A description of the potential impacts associated with a development plan, mitigation measures to address impacts and a selected preferred alternative.
Environmental Incidents Events or releases that have occurred where there has been a loss of control. Categorized on five levels, based on their potential environmental impact (from Level 1 with no or very low potential impact, through Level 5 with potentially severe impact).
Environmental Management Systems Processes and procedures that guide Newmont in managing impacts to air, water and ecosystems, and the efforts we take to ensure our mines are successfully reclaimed and land is restored for beneficial reuse.

Fallow Land Land currently not planted with crops.
Feasibility study A comprehensive study undertaken to determine the economic feasibility of a project; the conclusion will determine if a production decision can be made and is used for financing arrangements.
Footprint The land area that is disturbed through the construction and operation of a mine.
Free, Prior and Informed Consultation Recognizes people's inherent and prior rights. Respects their legitimate authority to require that third parties enter into an equal and respectful relationship with them.
Fugitive Emissions Emissions of vapors, gases or particulates from sources or unintended releases which are not reasonably passed through a stack, chimney, vent, or other functionally equivalent opening. In the mining industry, typical fugitive emissions include dust from mining activities and engine exhaust from mobile equipment.

Heap Leaching A process whereby gold is extracted by "heaping" crushed ore on sloping impermeable pads and continually applying a weak cyanide solution that dissolves the gold. The gold-laden solution is then collected for gold recovery.

(Heap) Leach Pad An engineered location where ore materials are placed on a prepared base consisting of a compacted clay liner with a high-density polyethylene liner cover. The ore materials placed on the pad are irrigated with a chemical solution that removes metals from the ore. The liner system prevents seepage below the leach pad and allows the chemical solution to be collected and sent to a processing facility to remove the metals of value.
Leaching A chemical process used to extract the gold.
Leadership Pipeline A model that defines the work to be done and the expected results at each level within the business, used by Managers and employees as part of the process of setting goals and evaluating performance.
Lost Time Accident (LTA) Any injury or illness that results in an employee being unable to work a full work shift.

Mercury A naturally occurring element that can be present in orebodies, often in the mineral form of mercury sulfide (HgS), called cinnabar.
Mill A processing facility where ore is finely ground and thereafter undergoes physical or chemical treatment to extract valuable metals.
Milling Sorts the ore by size, crushes the rock and extracts the gold.
Mine Life Cycle An approach to understanding mining operations that emphasizes the importance of planning for sustainable outcomes before mining begins and after operations end.
