General Report Information

Scope of Report

This report focuses on Newmont's current operating sites. Data presented here updates our 2011 report and is for the 2012 calendar year, and all financial figures are quoted in U.S. dollars, unless noted otherwise. References to "Newmont," "the company," "we" and "our" refer to Newmont Mining Corporation and/or our affiliates and subsidiaries.

This report focuses on:
  • The health and safety of our employees, contractors and communities.
  • The fair and equitable treatment of our work force.
  • The long-term or sustainable contribution our operations make to local communities.
  • The protection of the environment throughout the mine life cycle.
  • The ethical governance structures we employ to ensure we are focused on sustainability issues.
  • Managing emerging sustainability issues in our Value Chain.
Exploration activities, projects and closed sites are included in the report when and as they are material. The rationale for this decision is based on the lack of robust data collection systems that makes the data for some projects less comparable to that of operating sites. Newmont reports KCGM data in all sections except the People section and greenhouse gases and it is footnoted in both sections for transparency.

We prepared the Global Sustainability Report in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines (G3), including the Mining and Metals Sector Supplement (piloted in 2005 and final version released in 2010). It has been assured by Bureau Veritas. This does not include verification of financial data, which was taken from Newmont's 2012 Annual Report audited by PricewaterhouseCoopers.

This report also fulfills our commitment to report progress on our commitment to the ICMM 10 Principles of Sustainable Development and our commitment to implement the UN Global Compact's 10 principles on human rights, bribery and corruption, labor and the environment.
