Social Baseline Studies
Standard's Intent: To set the minimum requirements for collecting baseline information that describes the comprehensive social context and characteristics of the populations living near Newmont sites.
Social Impact Assessment
Standard's Intent: To provide the minimum requirements for identifying and evaluating social impacts, both adverse and beneficial, related to a site's area of influence, in order to provide an informed analysis upon which to develop and implement effective short- and long-term mitigation and development plans.
Stakeholder Mapping
Standard's Intent: To define minimum requirements for the identification of people and groups (stakeholders) who have an interest in Newmont activities relative to their needs and interests, relative power and legitimacy, and relationships between them which can serve as a guide to the development of effective engagement mechanisms and strategies.
External Stakeholder Engagement
Standard's Intent: To define the minimum requirements for planning, implementing, and monitoring stakeholder engagement practice, as the basis for developing and maintaining constructive, long-term relationships and minimizing potential risks to Newmont's activities.
Expectation and Commitment Management
Standard's Intent: To ensure a system is in place to manage stakeholder expectations and commitments between Newmont and stakeholders related to the activities of the company with the aim of supporting the development and management of relationships.
Complaint/Grievance Management and Resolution
Standard's Intent: This standard sets forth the minimum requirements for defining and formalizing the management process and key procedures to understand, prioritize and manage complaints and grievances related to Newmont activities.
Monitoring and Evaluation
Standard's Intent: To define minimum requirements for monitoring and evaluation activity to ensure the ongoing, methodical collection and analysis of data on engagement and program activities to assess their success at achieving specified goals and objectives.
Local Community Investment
Standard's Intent: Ensure that each Newmont site has a strategic program for providing financial and in-kind assistance that helps to foster sustainable development in local communities while ensuring compliance with Newmont's anti-corruption guidance.
Security and Human Rights
Standard's Intent: To set the minimum requirements for Newmont in providing safety and security for Newmont employees and assets in a manner that respects human rights and is consistent with Newmont's commitment to the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights.
Land Access, Acquisition and Resettlement
Standard's Intent: To set the minimum requirements for accessing or acquiring land before any site-related activity commences, so that the rights and needs of local communities related to land access and acquisition are assessed and addressed prior to impact, and such interactions between the company and the local community are done in a manner that fosters trust and mutual respect.
Management of Cultural and Heritage Sites
Standard's Intent: To set the minimum requirements for the identification, protection and management of sites with cultural or heritage significance to local stakeholders within the areas of influence of Newmont activity so as to prevent unauthorized disturbance by Newmont personnel.
Hydrocarbon Management
Standard's Intent: To set minimum Newmont requirements for the management of hydrocarbons to control occurrences of spills, releases, leaks and uncontrolled overflows such that environmental impacts are avoided or minimized.
Chemical Management
Standard's Intent: To set the minimum Newmont requirements for the management of chemicals to prevent spills, releases, leaks, overflows and unplanned chemical reactions such that environmental impacts are managed and minimized.
Cyanide Management
Standard's Intent: To set the minimum Newmont requirements for cyanide management to be protective of human health and wildlife and to prevent uncontrolled releases to the environment.
Mercury Management
Standard's Intent: To set the minimum Newmont requirements for the management of elemental mercury generated from Newmont facilities to prevent uncontrolled releases to the environment.
Tailing Management
Standard's Intent: To set the minimum Newmont requirements for the characterization of tailing, protection of wildlife, protection of groundwater, prevention of uncontrolled releases to the environment, management of process fluids, and closure and reclamation of tailing storage facilities.
Waste Rock Management
Standard's Intent: To set the minimum Newmont requirements for the management of waste rock to prevent environmental impacts, promote beneficial post-mining land uses and reduce post-mining closure and reclamation liability.
Waste Management
Standard's Intent: To set the minimum Newmont requirements for the management of hazardous wastes, non-hazardous wastes and wastewater generated at Newmont sites, such that human health and the environment are protected.
Water Management
Standard's Intent: To set the minimum Newmont requirements to manage water at mining facilities including site water balances, stormwater, discharges, and dewatering activities such that human health and the environment are protected.
Air Quality Management
Standard's Intent: To set the minimum Newmont requirements to manage point and non-point source air emissions to be protective of human health and the environment.
Closure and Reclamation Planning
Standard's Intent: To set the minimum Newmont requirements for closure and reclamation planning and management of long-term liabilities associated with mining sites pursuant to United States Financial Accounting Standards (FAS) Statement Number 143 requirements.
Heap Leach Facilities Management
Standard's Intent: To set the minimum Newmont requirements for the characterization of the ore, protection of wildlife, protection of groundwater, prevention of uncontrolled releases to the environment, management of process fluids, and closure and reclamation of heap leach facilities.
