Managing for Sustainability
At Newmont, we often discuss what we need to do to keep our company strong - not just for the next few years, but for generations to come. Inevitably, we return to this fact: Our viability as a business depends on our ability to develop, operate and close mines in a manner that provides long-term value not just for Newmont, but for our stakeholders as well.

It's not enough, then, for us to deliver strong financial returns on our investments. Rather, the only way we can achieve this long-term value is by creating and maintaining high standards for protecting the environment, safeguarding the health, human rights and well being of our employees and communities, and creating sustainable, long-term economic and social opportunities in the areas we operate.

The idea of "consent" from these local communities has long been discussed in the natural resources industry. More than ever before, communities are empowered to determine their collective futures. There is more information available than ever before, and it moves faster. People can communicate their ideas, organize themselves and advocate for change.

For these reasons, it's more important than ever for Newmont to earn the consent of local communities and governments. In addition to our work in safety, environmental stewardship, and social responsibility, the notion of transparency is tremendously important in this process.

Transparency has grown as a watchword in the industry, and we welcome the growing interest in such an important element of our success. Newmont has long been a leader in this area. One of our most significant transparency initiatives has been our Community Relationships Review, a comprehensive assessment completed in 2009. This report was the most in-depth, detailed analysis of the state of local community relationships that's been completed in the industry. We've learned invaluable lessons from this honest analysis. We welcome you to review the report on this site, as well as how the lessons from the report have influenced how we engage with our local communities and manage our operations.

Another growing area of sustainability on which we have an intense focus is climate change. Even though the global community has yet to identify a clear framework for moving forward, Newmont is taking action to reduce our emissions, become more energy efficient, and improve our business by taking a smarter energy approach.

At a very fundamental level, our approach to sustainability is very simple: Each and every employee has ownership of our performance in social responsibility, environmental protection, and safety. While many of the strategies and ideas behind our sustainability approach are very complex, the mandate of individual responsibility is very simple.

We welcome your feedback on this report. Thanks for reading.
