Newmont's Safety Journey Newmont's Safety Journey

Going Beyond the Mine

Newmont's Safety Journey is designed to assist individuals, teams, sites and regions in the assessment of their progress toward fully integrating safety into everything we do. The journey can be used to educate and enhance the ability of our employees to identify problems and take the actions necessary to create an integrated safety culture across the globe.

In the gold mining industry, key health and safety risks can vary from operating large mobile equipment and working with difficult ground conditions to handling hazardous materials and being exposed to chemical hazards. To assist Newmont leadership and our employees in managing these risks, Newmont's Global HSLP Management System consists of Management Standards, based on OHSAS 18001 and the principles of quality systems, and Technical Standards that address key risk areas for mining and mining-related activities. We use the Safety Journey to measure our progress in integrating these standards in the workplace.

We believe that a safe working environment requires the uncompromising commitment of our employees and contractors to demonstrate leadership in safety. We will conduct business "The Safe Way, The Right Way, Everyday." We believe the following safety principles will help achieve business excellence:
  • Safe production is our most important objective.
  • All injuries are preventable.
  • Any task that can't be done safely won't be done.
  • Working safely is a condition of employment.
  • Everyone is accountable for his or her own safety and the safety of those around them.
  • Everyone is expected to identify hazards and manage risks.
  • Everyone must maintain the necessary skills to work safely.
  • There are certain safety practices that, if breached, may lead to termination of employment.

How We Engage

Newmont's Health, Safety and Loss Prevention (HSLP) teams are engaged in a company-wide education and assessment process in support of Newmont's Safety Journey. Upon completion of this process, each and every employee will have a better understanding of where we, individually and as a company, are located along the Safety Journey and how we can continue to move forward along this path as 'One Newmont.'

Air Quality

It's important for employees to realize that there is no right or wrong place to be on the Safety Journey. Instead, it is important to improve each and every day until we reach our ultimate goal of eliminating all workplace accidents, injuries and illnesses.

Progression along the Safety Journey will consist of:
  • Increasing employee ownership
  • Integration of risk and hazard management
  • Increasing line management engaged on HSLP matters
  • Greater focus on incident investigation, management of change and auditing.
