Since early 2003, Newmont had been using our own Five Star assessment process to evaluate how well we managed our operations' health, safety and loss prevention programs through the agreed HSLP and Integrated Management System standards.
In 2007, after careful consideration, Newmont made the decision to cease the Five Star program and use recognized performance-based audits. As a measure of external performance, we have elected that regions become certified with the Occupational Health and Safety Audit System (OHSAS) 18001. OHSAS 18001 is an internationally accepted specification designed around international standards and certification bodies. Newmont will maintain our own HSLP standards for the external assessors to audit. The audit process defines the requirements for establishing, implementing and operating an occupational health and safety management system, and provides independent verification of that system through third-party audits. In 2010, operations in Australia, Nevada, Peru and Ghana gained or continued OHSAS 18001 certification.
