Hazardous Waste Management Hazardous Waste Management

Going Beyond the Mine

Managing waste is one of the central tenets of a strong environmental program, and this is particularly true with hazardous materials. Whenever possible, hazardous materials should be replaced with more environmentally friendly products. When use of hazardous materials is necessary, policies should be adopted to protect employees and the environment, and to reuse and recycle these materials as much as possible.

How We Engage

We manage our business to minimize the use of hazardous chemicals, ensure appropriate preparation and accounting for their risks, and maximize the opportunities for reuse and recycling.

Our operations are required to implement a system that reviews the environmental and safety risks of chemicals for use at the operation before they can be brought on site. In many instances, this has resulted in substitution of toxic products for much safer and environmentally friendly products, such as citrus-based solvents instead of chlorinated solvents in truck shops.

2010 Overview

Globally in 2010, Newmont generated 28.3 thousand tonnes (31.2 thousand tons) of hazardous solid waste. Roughly 68.7 thousand tonnes (75.7 thousand tons) of non-hazardous solid waste was generated from our operations. The majority of used oil generated from our operations was recycled or burned for energy recovery.
