Why Is This Important?
Dust, nitrogen oxide and sulfur dioxide emissions can affect local air quality, contributing to smog and air pollution. Carefully monitoring air quality, and taking appropriate measures when necessary, is critical for the health and safety of our employees and local communities.
Newmont's Approach
Newmont works to control emissions by strictly adhering to the laws and regulations of the host country. Where these laws are insufficient or inadequate, we voluntarily use the U.S. EPA's ambient air-quality standards as guidelines for acceptable air quality at the operation's boundary. We require all of our operations to evaluate and monitor major sources of atmospheric emissions.
Note: Our Australia sites operated by Newmont report air emissions on a fiscal year basis (July 1 to June 30), while Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) reports their air emissions on a calendar year basis (January 1 to December 31).
