Assessing Environmental Performance Assessing Environmental Performance

Newmont participates in, or undertakes internally, multiple programs to verify achievement with internal environmental standards, compliance with applicable laws, and standardized management systems are in place to identify, address and manage the environmental risks related to a modern mining operation. To achieve this, Newmont has undertaken the following steps:
  • Newmont utilizes a rigorous capital approval process whereby new project designs must include planning and budgeting to address environmental issues through the full mine lifecycle (design, construction, operation, and closure) before funds will be allocated for the project. The approval process includes rigorous environmental review by the Newmont ESR department and often includes third-party expertise.
  • All of Newmont's continuing operations have been ISO 14001 certified by year-end 2010. Boddington, our newest mine, began commercial production in Q4 2009 and is currently completing the certification process with a goal to become certified by year-end 2011. The ISO 14001 certification requires annual third-party audits of the management system.
  • All Newmont operations that process ore with cyanide are certified under the International Cyanide Management Code and are audited by a third party every three years. Boddington, our newest mine, began commercial production in Q4 2009 and is currently completing the certification process with a goal to become certified by year-end 2012.
  • All Newmont-operated properties are audited internally on a rolling three-year time frame to assess legal compliance with all applicable environmental regulatory laws and commitments.
All Newmont properties are inspected periodically by the applicable regulatory agencies within the countries in which we operate. These inspections occur at least annually and often on a bi-annual or quarterly basis.
