Perspective Environment
"Our commitment to environmental stewardship begins during the exploration phase, long before operations at a site begin. We work every day to continue this commitment through the entire life cycle, through operations to closure and beyond. Being the resource company of choice means we need to excel at environmental performance."
- Richard O'Brien, president and CEO

Mining is a resource-intensive industry, and Newmont's operations have the potential to impact the local environment and natural resources. With this in mind, we must focus on continually improving our environmental approach, maximizing benefits and minimizing negative impacts at our operations across the world - currently, in six countries on four continents.

One of the foundations of our environmental approach is the active pursuit of collaborative opportunities. We can achieve far more by working in partnerships with nongovernmental organizations, governments, development agencies like the World Bank, and civil society.

At all times, Newmont will operate in compliance with applicable laws, regulations and other legal requirements. In addition to this mandate, our internal management system includes a global set of performance standards. Our goal is continuous improvement, and we regularly measure ourselves against these performance criteria to track our progress.

Finally, integrated planning is a central element of our environmental approach. We create standards across the entire mine life cycle, which allows us to take an integrated approach in our environmental programs, from planning through development, construction, operation and closure.

In 2010, Newmont focused on:
  1. Continuing a methodical approach for developing our current draft Global Biodiversity Policy and standard through partnering with experts to ensure a meaningful corporate program with the aim of ensuring positive conservation outcomes and biodiversity management.
  2. The permitting and installation of Maximum Achievable Control Technology (MACT) to control mercury emissions at appropriate sites operated by Newmont
  3. Refining final closure and reclamation implementation plans for all mines with less than five years mining life remaining.
  4. Certification of all Newmont operating sites except Boddington to the ISO 14001 standard by the end of 2010. Boddington, our newest operation, is currently in the process to become certified by year-end 2011.
  5. Disclosure of Newmont's North America Operations emissions to The Climate Registry.
