"Capturing the voices of stakeholders is not a matter of opining what is 'right' or 'wrong.' Nor is it a matter of agreeing or not with the concerns. It is simply a matter of recognizing those concerns in the terms in which they are expressed. It is a matter of respect. Such respect is at the heart of relationship building."

Mining sometimes is seen as a catalyst for habitat destruction, water pollution, air pollution, displacement of Indigenous peoples and impacting local wildlife. Because of this, society often views existing and new mining projects with skepticism.
It is the role of the mining industry to work with its stakeholders to develop programs and processes that provide levels of assurance, or confidence, that the risks associated with mining will be managed responsibly and will create value for host communities and governments. Our assurance process involves a range of programs - and initiatives in which we participate - to provide our stakeholders with confidence in our performance and reporting.
Assurance systems in the mining industry are designed to provide stakeholders with some measure of confidence related to select aspects of operational performance, such as managing cyanide, reclamation of mining disturbance, compliance with laws and regulations, and accuracy and reliability of a company's sustainability record.
Management System
Our
Management System is used across our company to drive continuous improvement. It includes overarching management system standards as well as discipline-specific performance standards for our environmental, community/social and health and safety management teams.
In 2007, Newmont adopted ISO Environmental Standard 14001 and Occupational Health and Safety Advisory Services (OHSAS) 18001 as standards for certification at our operations. We are proud to report that in 2010 all of our operations were certified to ISO 14001 with the exception of our Boddington project, which was still in the ramp-up to full production. You can read more about our progress in assessing and certifying each of our sites against these internationally recognized standards in the
Environment and
Health and Safety sections of this report.
In 2010, we marked our fourth year of continued participation in the DJSI World Index and our fifth year on the DJSI North American Index. The
Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes track the financial performance of the leading sustainability-driven companies worldwide. The DJSI World Index represents the leading 10 percent of the largest 2,500 companies of the Dow Jones Global Index worldwide in terms of sustainability. Companies are selected according to a systematic corporate sustainability assessment that identifies leaders based on a variety of criteria including climate change strategies, energy consumption, human resources development, knowledge management, stakeholder relations and corporate governance.
