Significant Awards & Recognition Significant Awards & Recognition
Newmont views awards and recognitions as a means of gauging our progress on issues related to the environment, community relationships, community investment, and other company values.

To that end, we've included a list of key awards received by the company during 2010. However, it's equally important and beneficial that we note instances where opportunities for improvement have been identified. A specific example of an identified opportunity for improvement relates to our operation in Ghana.

During 2010, the Ghana Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) publicly disclosed 2009 environmental and social performance scores according to a new system (AKOBEN) developed to encourage improved performance in the mining and manufacturing sectors. Although we received a strong overall score, we received an overall "Red" rating in the AKOBEN environmental rating and disclosure program. (In contrast, our operations in Indonesia received a respected "Green" rating in Indonesia, outlined below.)

Overall, the environmental and social performance of the Ahafo mine were strong, with a score of 82.77 percent; however, the Ahafo mine received an automatic "Red" rating due to an accidental process solution overflow which occurred in October 2009 and was publicly reported by the company. Following the accidental overflow, Newmont put in place necessary corrective measures and finalized payment of compensation of $4.9 million to the Government of Ghana in April 2010.

According to the Ministerial Panel appointed by the Minister of Environment, Science & Technology, 45% of the compensation will be used to meet some development needs of the affected communities, 40% will be paid to the Environmental Protection Agency and the remaining 15% goes to the Inspectorate Division of the Minerals Commission.

We won't win every award or receive the highest rating in each evaluation, but we use these opportunities to examine areas for opportunity and improvement in our operations.
