Welcome to Newmont's Global Sustainability Report. We designed this report to meet the needs of our many stakeholders, including our local communities, employees and contractors, shareholders and the investment community, as well as numerous nonprofit and nongovernmental organizations.
In this report, you will find Newmont's approach to sustainability. We divide our sustainability efforts into four broad focuses: Our local Communities, the surrounding Environment, our People, and their Health and Safety. We've also included information about our company, including our governance, policies and standards, as well as our Assurance efforts.
In each of these sections, we provide brief Snapshots - illustrations of our sustainability programs in action. We also have compiled a collection of longer Case Studies, with a more in-depth look at these initiatives. To provide a relatively comprehensive report, we include descriptions of ongoing programs, new programs initiated during the reporting year, as well as examples of site-level practices from prior years that are useful illustrations of the specific topic or issue being discussed. Finally, we offer an overview of our overall performance against the indicators of the Global Reporting Initiative and other global initiatives to which we have committed, as well as our targets for 2010.
We will post newsworthy programs and stories from our operations throughout the year, so please check back regularly for updates. In May, we release an updated report, including performance data from the previous year to demonstrate tangible progress we make in our contribution toward sustainable development.
