Environment Overview
At Newmont, we understand that stewardship of the environment and relationships with the communities in which we operate are inextricably linked to the success of our business. This has led to a greater emphasis, within Newmont and industry-wide, on the concepts of sustainable development, environmental stewardship and social responsibility.
The year 2007 was another year in which we continued to focus on improving our performance in these important areas. Ultimately, it is Newmont's performance in these areas that will secure our continued access to land and capital, and earn us the reputation as the resource company of choice for communities, governments and other partners.
Newmont operates mines in eight countries on four continents encompassing a variety of ecosystems from the continental divide of the Andes in Peru, to the forests of Indonesia into the deserts of North America and Australia. While each operation has unique characteristics, there are common aspects to all our operations that have the potential to impact the environment and natural resources.
