Assurance Overview Assurance Overview
Mining is often viewed with skepticism by communities and governments as having a potentially negative long-term impact on people and the environment. The industry continues to work with its stakeholders to develop programs and processes that provide levels of assurance, or confidence, that the risks associated with mining will be managed responsibly and will create value for host communities and governments. Assurance encompasses a range of programs Newmont uses and initiatives in which we participate to provide our stakeholders, and in particular the communities and governments that host our operations, confidence in our performance and reporting.

In this section, we include an independent assurance statement for this report, feedback from stakeholders about our 2006 report, external assurance initiatives and our internal assessment process.

In 2007, Newmont became a member of the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index. The Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes track the financial performance of the leading sustainability-driven companies worldwide. The DJSI World Index captures the leading 10% in terms of sustainability out of the largest 2,500 companies of the Dow Jones Global Index worldwide. Companies are selected according to a systematic corporate sustainability assessment that identifies leaders based on a variety of criteria including climate change strategies, energy consumption, human resources development, knowledge management, stakeholder relations and corporate governance.
