2006 CEO Message

A Statement From Newmont's Chief Executive Officer

Newmont invests and operates in many diverse countries around the world. By working with integrity, communicating with transparency, and partnering with host communities, we build sustainable relationships that create value and opportunity for all stakeholders. We know that the quality of the relationships we form with local communities, governments and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) has a direct impact on the bottom line for our shareholders.

Oftentimes, communities and governments can be apprehensive about the potential for negative long-term impact on people and the environment from mining. This future uncertainty many associate with our business directly affects our ability to access land and obtain approvals. It is our job to provide assurance, or confidence, that the risks associated with mining will be managed responsibly and will create long-term value for host communities. Such assurance is essential to building these mutually beneficial relationships founded on trust.

Newmont is a founding member of the International Council on Mining & Metals (ICMM), a mining industry organization with the express purpose of promoting improved practices and reporting sustainability performance through a process that is independently verified to ensure credibility and validity. Newmont continues to participate in a number of voluntary initiatives and programs, such as the Global Compact, which are intended to raise and maintain standards of corporate conduct. In addition, we continue to invest in new technologies and innovative techniques to safeguard the environment and our employees.

I am proud of the fact that the majority of our employees are drawn from our host communities. It is our employees who help us achieve our commitment to be an industry leader in safety, environmental stewardship and social responsibility.

To lead and succeed in these areas, our sites must operate transparently, while striving to make the social benefits we bring to local communities sustainable. I believe partnering with NGOs - those that share the common goal of sustainability and the reduction of poverty - can further help us provide those benefits. Newmont's future depends on our ability to develop, operate, close and reclaim mines in ways consistent with our commitment to sustainable development, protection of human health and the environment, and adding value to the communities in which we operate. While we have more work to do, we are making progress in our mission to become the gold company of choice for communities, investors and governments.

As for the last four years, we have prepared this report in accordance with the 2002 GRI Guidelines. It represents a balanced and reasonable presentation of Newmont's economic, environmental, and social performance.
