About This Report

Material Issues

Our 2006 Global Sustainability Report includes information on areas in which our company and our stakeholders consider material or significantly important. We identify these material issues by talking to our stakeholders, tracking media coverage, and assessing our own operations' performance against our policies and standards. This report focuses on:
  • The health and safety of our employees, contractors and communities;
  • The fair and equitable treatment of our work force;
  • The long-term or sustainable contribution our operations make to local communities; and,
  • The protection of the environment throughout the mine life cycle.
  • Exploration activities, projects and closed sites are included in the report when and as they are material.
We prepared the 2006 Global Sustainability Report in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines, including the Mining and Metals Sector Supplement (published in 2005). We also commissioned World Monitors Inc. to provide independent assurance on this corporate Global Sustainability Report to ensure it is objective and credible. World Monitors also verified select data contained in the report as part of its independent assurance process. This does not include verification of financial data, which was taken from Newmont's 2006 Annual Report audited by PricewaterhouseCoopers.

This report describes how we approach sustainability reporting, as well as the internal and external assurances we seek to validate our reporting. We also share detailed information on the 2006 programs and performance in the areas of community relations, environment, health and safety, and employee well-being.

Due to the online format of this report, we will post newsworthy programs and stories from our operations throughout the year, so please check back regularly for updates. In May of each year, we will release an updated report, including performance data from the previous year to demonstrate tangible progress we made from year to year.
